Empowered Eleuthero
Combining standardized eleutherosides B and E with whole Siberian Ginseng root powder provides a concentrated source of this well-known herb. Many practitioners find it useful when combined with formulas such as Xiao Yao San, Gui Pi Tang or Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang for their patients with high levels of emotional stress coupled with symptoms of deficiency.
Utilized for thousands of years by ancient Chinese herbalists, “superior class” herbs were classified as the most effective plants to improve vitality, the capacity to work, and to create a sense of well-being. Herbs in this class were considered to be taken for extended periods. In recent decades many of these superior class plants have come to be called “adaptogens”. There are several plants commonly used in Chinese medicine with these adaptogenic properties: Panax ginseng (Ren Shen), Schizandra chinensis (Wu Wei Zi), and Eleutherococcus senticosus (Ci Wu Jia or Wu Jia Shen).
The last of these three was known for a time as Siberian ginseng but is now commonly called eleuthero. Eleuthero was the initial focus of the research that led to the new category of adaptogens. There are now 50 years of clinical scientific research to confirm its ability to help patients adapt to periods of physical and emotional stress, making it the most researched of all the adaptogens. In 1960 a Russian scientist specializing in pharmacology, Dr. Israel Brekhman, published his results in an article entitled, A New Medicinal Plant of the Family of Araliaceae -- The Spiny Eleutherococcus1.. Based on his research, adaptogens are defined using the following four criteria:
1. The action of an adaptogen should be innocuous and cause minimal disturbance to the normal physiological functions of an organism. It must be absolutely harmless. 2. An adaptogenic agent should not be active only in a specific context or against a particular background. It must have a broad therapeutic spectrum of action.
3. The action of an adaptogen has to be non-specific, that is to say, resistance to a wide variety of action of harmful factors, whether of a physical, chemical or a biological nature, has to increase. In other words, the action of an adaptogen has to be more intense as unfavorable changes occur in an organism.
4. An adaptogen has to have a normalizing or stabilizing action independent of the direction of previous changes.1 People’s Herbs has formulated Empowered Eleuthero to help with fatigue and deficiency without creating unwanted side-effects or being difficult to digest. It can be combined with other People’s Herbs products for given complaints:
• With Red Rice Yeast Plus for patients who have minor lipid problems.
• With Boost Essence for athletes’ who need additional support for training. • With appropriate classical formulas such as Xiao Yao Wan, Gui Pi Tang, Chai Hu Long Gu Mu Li Tang for patients undergoing high levels of stress coupled with additional keynote symptoms for the given formula. Traditionally Empowered Eleuthero is thought to have a therapeutic focus on LU, SP, KD. It is also well to bear in mind that it was traditionally substituted for Wu Jia PI, a Dispel Wind Damp herb. Thus, it can be expected to be of some use in conditions of joint stiffness and pain.
